The Lakers make it official, sign Jodie Meeks and re-sign Devin Ebanks
The Lakers have signed free agent guard Jodie Meeks, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Meeks, a three-year NBA veteran, appeared in 66 games (50 starts) last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 8.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 24.9 minutes. In addition, the team has also re-signed forward Devin Ebanks.
Meeks is a very good pickup for the Lakers. He’s signed to a 2 year / 3 million contract with the 2nd year being a team option. He will be very valuable off the bench backing up Kobe, spacing the floor, and scoring. He started most of the time the last 2 years with the Sixers but I don’t think he’s a starting quality shooting guard, but he would be excellent off the bench.
Also, heres a good interview with the Newest Laker Jodie Meeks: 1-on-1
Scouting report on Jodie Meeks: An above average 3 point shooter, quick release, can be streaky. Good size (6’4) for a backup shooting guard. Solid defender, works hard on D. Has NBA level athleticism but is not an explosive athlete. Decent passer. Cant do much off the dribble. Gym rat, hard worker, plays to his strengths. Young (24).
What the signing of Jodie Meeks means:
I like the re-signing of Devin Ebanks. He’s young and has some good upside. The Lakers don’t plan to re-sign Matt Barnes, so there will be some playing time to show what he can do with consistent minutes. Though I hope he can work on improving his 3 point shooting; he was 2 for 14 last season. I hope he can develop into a lockdown defender. Basically, I want him to become the same exact player that Trevor Ariza was.
The Lakers bench is pretty much set and on paper its looks pretty solid; at the very least its better than last years.
